Pediatric ENT ENT (Otorhinolarynology)Dr. Michael “Mike” Poole completed a Ph.D. in microbiology/immunology from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where he also received his medical degree. Dr. Poole did an internship in general surgery and a residency in otolaryngology also at UNC-Chapel Hill. While there, Dr. Poole received UNC’s Kuno Award and the Leary Award – the top awards for research in each graduating medical school class. Dr. Poole is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, American Society for Microbiology and Society of University Otolaryngologists – Head and Neck Surgeons.
Dr. Poole has a long standing clinical and research interest in ENT infections and issues related to antibiotic resistance. As the only ENT physician in the U.S. with a doctorate in microbiology, he is generally considered his specialty’s top expert in antibiotic treatment of ENT infections. He has authored or co-authored several national and international guidelines concerning treatment of sinus and ear infections. He also has a long-standing interest in sleep apnea and snoring, having authored the first ENT textbook chapters on pediatric sleep apnea.
Dr. Poole is a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. States Army, having spent four years on active duty and 20 years in the Army Reserves.
